Making Self-Care a Priority During Perimenopause

Perimenopause can be a challenging time, both physically and emotionally. Hormonal fluctuations may bring mood swings, fatigue, brain fog, and even a loss of confidence in yourself. On some days, self-care might feel impossible. Even looking in the mirror can be difficult. This is exactly why prioritising self-care during the perimenopause is essential. It’s not about perfection, it’s about showing up for yourself with kindness, even on the hardest of days.

How to Practice Self-Care When You Can’t Face the Mirror

Some days, your reflection may not feel like your own. Whether it's weight changes, tired eyes, or simply feeling disconnected, know that you are not alone. Self-care on these days doesn’t have to mean a full skincare routine or getting dressed up.

  • Use gentle affirmations - Even if you don’t feel them yet, words like “I am worthy of love and care” can shift your energy.

  • Trust that this feeling will pass - No emotion lasts forever. Ride the wave, knowing that brighter moments are ahead.

  • Would I say this to a friend? - If not, change the way you speak to yourself.

  • What do I need right now? - Sometimes, the best self-care is listening to your body—rest when you need to, nourish yourself, and let go of guilt.

Getting to Know Yourself Again with Compassion and Kindness

Many women push themselves to “keep going,” even when they are exhausted. Society has conditioned us to speed up well into our 40's and 50's. Perimenopause is an invitation to slow down and be gentle. Your body, mind, and emotions are shifting. Instead of resisting this change, what if you embraced this as a chance to rediscover yourself?

  • What brings you joy now? Maybe old hobbies no longer excite you—explore new interests that align with who you are today.

  • How do you want to feel? Instead of chasing your “old self,” think about the woman you are becoming.

  • Experiment with self-care. Try different forms—meditation, journaling, gentle movement—and see what resonates. You never know, you may even rediscover a passion for dancing again!

Top Self-Care Tips for Perimenopause

  1. Prioritise rest – Sleep and relaxation are essential for balance.

  2. Nourish your body – Eat foods that support hormonal health and hydration.

  3. Move in ways that feel good – Gentle yoga or walking can be uplifting

  4. Set boundaries – Say no to things that drain you and slow down the pace a little

  5. Find support – Connect with like-minded women going through similar experiences. Be curious about how your body is managing on the inside. Consider checking your hormone levels, lowering stress levels and even trying acupuncture.

Perimenopause is a transition, but it’s also an opportunity for self-discovery. The more you care for yourself, the more empowered you’ll feel as you step into this next chapter.
